{"id":5707,"date":"2021-04-23T08:23:50","date_gmt":"2021-04-23T12:23:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stitchsewshop.com\/?p=5707"},"modified":"2021-04-23T08:24:37","modified_gmt":"2021-04-23T12:24:37","slug":"stitch-tee-hacks-apr-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/stitch-tee-hacks-apr-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Stitch Tee Pattern Hacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today on the blog, Mary is sharing some of the t-shirts she recently made for her daughter using our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Stitch-Tee-Womens---Stitch-Sew-Shop-with-Birdstalk-Patterns-x48452014.htm\"><strong>Stitch Tee<\/strong><\/a>! \u00a0She has hacked this pattern for different sleeve\u00a0and neckline styles to get three completely different looks.. \u00a0Plus, she has great tips for creating these same hacks yourself &#8211; perfect for when you already have a well-fitting pattern that you want to update with the latest trends!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One weekend my daughter asked me to make her some new jersey knit tops.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>She had very specific ideas of what she wanted:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>a funnel neck, a scoop neck, a mock wrap, a bell sleeve, a long bishop sleeve, and a puff sleeve.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In other words, not your standard tee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Now I could have found some patterns to address all those options, but it was overcast and raining, and I just wanted to hunker down at home and sew.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5708 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/stitchtee_mainimage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" \/>\n<p>So, I pulled out our TNT (Tried and True) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Stitch-Tee-Womens---Stitch-Sew-Shop-with-Birdstalk-Patterns-x48452014.htm\"><strong>Stitch Tee from Birdstalk Patterns<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 the same one we use to teach the t-shirt class!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I had already made Brigid a tee and a turtleneck from this pattern.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>First would be a <strong>funnel neck<\/strong> and <strong>bell sleeve<\/strong> tee.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For the funnel neck I took the easy way and slapped the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Grace-Top---Friday-Pattern-Co-x48331802.htm\">Grace Top (Friday Pattern Co.)<\/a> neckline onto the Stitch Tee, matching the shoulders and center front. Then I taped it at the neckline and folded the excess Grace Pattern out of the way. I also shortened the bodices, as per requested.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5709\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5709\" class=\"wp-image-5709 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Pasted-Graphic.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stitch Tee with neckline from Grace Top<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For the sleeves, I cut the long sleeve off at the elbow (I took a guess).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I cut the bottom of the sleeve from cuff to elbow in about 8 places, leaving a paper hinge at the elbow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then I spread them until I had the fullness I thought I wanted for the sleeve. I taped them down, traced the outline, truing the edges and adding seam allowance to both elbow seams where I cut the pattern.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5711 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Pasted-Graphic-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"639\" \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5712 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Pasted-Graphic-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5713 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Pasted-Graphic-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/>\n<p>The results!<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5714 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Pasted-Graphic-5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"919\" \/>\n<p>(Rayon jersey from my stash)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Next up:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The <strong>Mock Wrap<\/strong> and <strong>Bishop Sleeve<\/strong>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>First I traced another front bodice and taped it to the original so I would have a full bodice pattern.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then I measured up about 3\u201c from the waist and marked one side. Because I wanted to add a 1\u201d wide band to the neckline, I also measured out 1\u201d from the neck edge and marked that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I used my trusty curve and drew a line from the shoulder\/neck mark to the waist mark and cut off the excess.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5715 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Pasted-Graphic-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/>\n<p>Sometimes a V-neck or a deep scoop neck will gape, so I cut a line from the neckline to the shoulder seam, leaving a little hinge at the seamline, and then from the cutting line to the shoulder seam (LEAVE THE HINGE- it keeps the seam allowances the same).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Overlap by \u00bc, tape down, add 3\/8\u201d seam allowance at the neckline and true the seams if necessary.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5717 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Pasted-Graphic-8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/>\n<p>The band at the neck was cut double the finished width plus seam allowances (2\u201d+3\/4\u201d) wide.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I calculate the length as 7\/8 or 9\/10 the length of the neckline.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If it is a soft, light fabric I will often use 7\/8; a firmer, thicker fabric will be 9\/10.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(Example: the neckline measures 24\u201d:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>24 x 7\/8 = 21\u201d long.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A 30\u201d neckline:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>30 x 9\/10 = 27\u201d long.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Notice how I cheated and used easy numbers to calculate! You get the idea).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mark the center of the back neckline and the center of the neck band with a notch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For the Bishop Sleeve:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I cut off the bottom 3\u201d of the long sleeve (I wanted a 3\u201d cuff).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I drew a line down the middle of the sleeve, and 2 on each side of that line (5 total).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Then I cut the lines and spread the pieces to the desired amount, taped them down and traced the underarm seams, added 1-1 \u00bd\u201d plus the seam allowance (3\/8\u201d) to the bottom of the sleeve so it would have a little soft spillover at the cuff.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I also put a notch at the center of the bottom of the sleeve.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5716 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Pasted-Graphic-7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"684\" height=\"912\" \/>\n<p>At the sleeve cap, I traced the sleeve from the underarm along the sleeve curve until the notch, then I raised the cap of the sleeve by about 1-1 \u00bd\u201d and connected to the other notch and underarm curve.<\/p>\n<p>Since the cuff will be folded, I double the length and add \u00be\u201d for seam allowances (3\/8\u201d per seam).
