{"id":5207,"date":"2020-09-29T14:47:15","date_gmt":"2020-09-29T18:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stitchsewshop.com\/?p=5207"},"modified":"2020-09-29T14:47:15","modified_gmt":"2020-09-29T18:47:15","slug":"stitch-samples-fauntleroy-top-straight-stitch-designs-sep-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/stitch-samples-fauntleroy-top-straight-stitch-designs-sep-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Stitch Samples :: Fauntleroy Top from Straight Stitch Designs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shop Girl Mary is sharing one of her first fall makes today &#8211; the Fauntleroy from Straight Stitch Designs. \u00a0The details on this top, from the draped cowl neck to the\u00a0deep cuffs, look great\u00a0in both a thick French Terry and a\u00a0lighter rayon knit like Mary used. \u00a0Plus, Mary has lots of tips for sewing with and stabilizing slippery knits!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Maker:\u00a0<\/strong>Mary<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pattern Used:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Fauntleroy-Top---Straight-Stitch-Designs-x48361837.htm\">Fauntleroy<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/PATTERNS\/Womens-Patterns\/SHOP-BY-DESIGNER\/Straight-Stitch-Designs.htm\">Straight Stitch Designs<\/a>. \u00a0Cozy meets refined with raglan sleeves and shoulder darts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You can sew the Fauntleroy with a relaxed turtleneck or cowl neck for a modern take on a classic silhouette.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sew your top in a knit such as ponte for a more structured look or a soft drapey knit for a relaxed look.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5208 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_0893.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/>\n<p><strong>Fabric Used:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This fabric is our <strong>Lightweight Rayon Pique Knit<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Dusty-Plum---Lightweight-Rayon-Pique-Knit-x52175888.htm\">Dusty Plum<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The texture of this pique knit reminds me of my dad\u2019s Izod golf shirts, but there the similarity ends.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This is a deliciously soft, cozy knit with the feel of sanded silk.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It has a lot of stretch; lengthwise &#8211; 50% stretch and width wise (selvage to selvage) &#8211; 75% stretch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It drapes beautifully and can be figure hugging in a close-fitting garment (a tee shirt). It is also an extra wide fabric &#8211; 78\u201d wide!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The pictures below show\u00a0how to test the stretch if you are unsure of the percentage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Measure 4\u201d \u2013 not at the edge of the fabric &#8211; mark with pins or safety pins, fold the fabric in half, and stretch the fabric gently as far as you can without distorting the fabric too much.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For every inch it stretches it is 25%:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>1\u201d = 25%, 2\u201d = 50%, 3\u201d = 75%, etc.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5209 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_0884.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5210 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_0885.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/>\n<p>Stitch has this knit in three lovely colors:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Dusty-Plum---Lightweight-Rayon-Pique-Knit-x52175888.htm\">Dusty Plum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Seafoam---Lightweight-Rayon-Pique-Knit-x52175887.htm\">Seafoam<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Dusk-Blue---Lightweight-Rayon-Pique-Knit-x52175896.htm\">Dusk Blue<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I chose the Dusty Plum because I love purples. The fabric has a soft sheen on the right side for a lovely dimension.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It could also<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>be used for a dressier garment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Under a shirt or jacket with its smooth finish and lightweight warmth, it would be a great layering piece.<\/p>\n<p>I washed it alone in cold water and dried it on low in the dryer to preshrink it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Rayon does tend to shrink, but I didn\u2019t notice very much shrinkage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It also washed beautifully.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Now that the garment is complete, I will wash it by hand or on delicate in a mesh bag and lay it flat to dry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I chose the pattern for the fabric.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I wanted a loose fitting top that would show off the beautiful drape of the fabric without worrying about it being clingy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Fauntleroy is a great choice, simple and classic, with a cool twist \u2013 the raglan sleeve and cowl.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you make any alterations to the pattern?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I shortened the length of the body by 2\u201d, I wanted a tunic length, not a dress length.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I am only 5\u20193\u201d, so usually everything is shortened.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The sleeves were really long, so I took 2 1\/2\u201d off before sewing on the deep cuff.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you have any tips for construction?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Usually I use my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Glass-Head-Pins---150-ct---Bohin-x38519939.htm\">glass head straight pins<\/a> when I am sewing, but they kept slipping out of the fabric, so I changed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Wonder-Clips---Pack-of-10---Clover-x38520323.htm\">wonder clips<\/a> (love them!) and that solved that issue.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Because the fabric has so much stretch, I was afraid the shoulder seams would stretch out, so I stabilized them with clear elastic. (Used my clips again!) I used a 3-step zigzag stitch and a Teflon foot on my machine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Teflon foot is great for sewing anything sticky or that tends to drag against the foot, like the clear elastic, pleather, leather, or vinyl.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The 3-step zigzag stitch is an excellent choice for sewing elastic directly onto fabric.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is secure, has good stretch and lays flat against the fabric (see pictures below).<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5212 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_0887.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5211 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_0888.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/>\n<p>The only thing I sewed on my conventional sewing machine was the clear elastic, everything else was done on my serger using a 3-thread wide stitch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I do love my serger!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It would be just as easy to sew with a zigzag stitch on your conventional machine, but do use a walking foot if you have one.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This fabric wants to move and is a little shifty, so the walking foot is a life saver.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Also, I would suggest using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Stretch-Needles---Schmetz-x38520110.htm\">Stretch Needle, size 75\/11<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Stretch Needles help eliminate skipped stitches in fabrics that have spandex. I use them for most of my knit fabric sewing.<\/p>\n<p>When you iron rayon, be sure your iron is not too hot and don\u2019t use a lot of pressure. You may end up with a shiny seam. (see picture) I used steam from the iron and then finger pressed the seams.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>With some rayons and tencels, if you press in a shiny spot, you can rub it with another piece of the rayon fabric, and the shine will disappear&#8212;sometimes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What did you like or dislike about the pattern\/fabric?<\/strong><\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5214 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_0906.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"839\" \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5228 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_0911.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/>\n<p>I love the feel of this fabric, soft and cozy without being heavy, and I like the soft colors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It does require a little more care when sewing, but I think choosing a simple pattern like the Fauntleroy is a good choice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It sewed up quickly, and I think it showcases the fabric well with the soft cowl and looser fit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I will keep the Fauntleroy in rotation this fall and winter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is a simple, fast sew and fits true to size.
