{"id":5188,"date":"2020-09-24T07:52:23","date_gmt":"2020-09-24T11:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stitchsewshop.com\/?p=5188"},"modified":"2020-09-24T07:52:23","modified_gmt":"2020-09-24T11:52:23","slug":"jeans-pocket-design-tutorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/jeans-pocket-design-tutorial\/","title":{"rendered":"Jeans Pocket Design Tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back pockets are a great place to add personalized details to your jeans. \u00a0An easy way to ensure perfect stitching on your pocket design is to use\u00a0<strong>Sticky Fabri-Solvy<\/strong>. \u00a0It comes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Sticky-Fabri-Solvy-20in-x-1yd---Sulky-x38520243.htm\">on a roll<\/a><\/strong>, or in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Sticky-Fabri-Solvy-Printable-Sheet---Sulky-x38519920.htm\">pre-cut 8&#8243;x10&#8243; sheets<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; perfect for popping through the printer! \u00a0We&#8217;ve put together a short tutorial for using it to create custom pockets on your jeans.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5190 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9657.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<p>First, pick your thread! \u00a0Our preferred topstitching thread for\u00a0denim is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Topstitch-Thread---Mara-70---Gutermann-x48964778.htm\"><strong>G\u00fctermann Mara 70<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(second from the top) because it gives you bold stitches without the tension issues you can often get with the thicker <strong>Mara 30\u00a0<\/strong>(top). \u00a0For more color options, you can also try using<strong> two strands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/NOTIONS\/THREAD\/ALL-PURPOSE-164-YARDS.htm\">regular thread<\/a><\/strong>, (middle) or one strand of regular thread and a <strong>triple stitch<\/strong>\u00a0(fourth from the top) on your machine. \u00a0Test out your options (like we have done below) and see what you like best! (The stitching at the bottom is a single strand of regular thread, using a normal straight stitch.)<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5219 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_0287.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<p>You will also need to pick your design. \u00a0If you like to draw, you can of course sketch your own design. Generic shapes and symbols are easy to find as clip art, and you can even\u00a0purchase downloadable designs from your favorite artists on sites like Etsy. Closet Core Patterns also has a fantastic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.closetcorepatterns.com\/free-downloadable-33-back-pocket-designs\/\">downloadable\u00a0PDF<\/a>\u00a0filled with 33 different back pocket templates!<\/p>\n<h2>Create your pocket:<\/h2>\n<h5>1. Cut out pockets and mark seam allowances. \u00a0(You can find this handy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Omnigrid-Ruler---1-x-6-x38520177.htm\">ruler<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopstitchsewshop.com\/shop\/c\/p\/Fabric-Mechanical-Pencil---White---Sewline-x41209846.htm\">ceramic marking pencil<\/a> in our shop!) These will help you with placement of your design. \u00a0Interface the pocket as needed.<\/h5>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5192 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9660-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<h5>2. \u00a0Choose your design and\u00a0Print it first on regular paper to make sure the scale and layout works.<\/h5>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5193 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9662.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<h5>3. Once you have it how you want it, print directly onto the Sticky Fabri-Solvy sheet. \u00a0If you have other things you want to embroider, use up the whole page with designs.\u00a0 (A tip for the little bits of fabri-solvy you will have left over: print your design on regular paper, tape the fabri-solvy piece over the design portion of the paper, and run it back through the printer!)<\/h5>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5194 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9667.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<h5>5. Cut out your design. Peel away backing, and stick it to the pocket. \u00a0The seam allowance markings will help you line it up, but remember that you will also be topstitching around the edge of the pocket to attach it to your jeans. \u00a0Depending on the design you choose, you may\u00a0want to leave an extra 3\/8&#8243; all around for that, too.<\/h5>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5195 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9669.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5197 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9670.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<h5>6. Stitch over the design &#8211; on your machine or by hand. \u00a0Straight lines and smooth curves make for easy machine stitching. The &#8220;stars&#8221; in the constellation were done with an eyelet stitch on the machine.<\/h5>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5196 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9671.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<h5>7. Gently peel back and trim away any\u00a0excess Fabri-Solvy. \u00a0Small, sharp snips are your friend here. \u00a0Be careful not to pull at your stitches.<\/h5>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5198 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9673.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5199 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9675.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<h5>8. Wash away any remaining bits with warm water. \u00a0A little bit of encouragement from your fingers will also help. \u00a0Again, be careful not to pull at your stitches.<\/h5>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5200 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/stitchsewshop.com\/development\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/IMG_9676.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/>\n<h5>9.
