Lately we’ve been seeing a lot of matching top and short sets. It’s an updated and more grown up version of the romper, and we’re looking forward to making our own versions of this trend.
I actually stumbled accidentally into this trend when my Tilly and the Buttons Bettine/Marigold mashup took a wrong turn because I forgot to leave a back opening so that I could get into it. Whoops. I decided instead to make my top and bottom into matching separates. Now, not only do I get to wear them together, I can also mix and match them with other items in my wardrobe.
Another great thing about this trend is that it is really easy to reproduce it on your own. Step one, find some cool fabric – we suggest something light and drapey. Here are four ideas to get you started:
My version was in a Cotton + Steel silky smooth rayon print. I think this floral one would be perfect for a trip to the beach:
If you want something with a bit more texture, try rayon crepe. The drape and feel are perfect for this type of outfit:

Step two: find a pattern. There are several options for patterns you could use to get this look. Megan Nielsen’s Reef set is a great choice because you get both the top and shorts all in one.
Of course if you would like pockets and a bit more coverage in the back, the Deer and Doe Goji shorts pattern and the Grainline Hadley would work well together too.
