Stitch Samples :: Sienna Maker Jacket from Closet Case Patterns

Next up in our sample series is Melanie, who recently finished making a colorful, springtime jacket. Read on to get a closer look at the details!

Maker: Melanie

Pattern Used:

Sienna Maker Jacket from Closet Case Patterns.  I made View C, which is the short chore jacket with button closure, optional sleeve pockets, and a back button placket.

Fabric Used:

Cotton Ikat in the Pink & Lemongrass Squares color way

(We also have it available in Black/Natural SquaresMulti/Black Squares, and Multi Stripe.  In fact, we love this fabric so much, we even featured it in our current window display!)

Did you make a muslin?

I did not make a muslin.  I used the new 14-30 size range which is drafted for a D cup.  In reviewing the size charts and reviews, I didn’t feel the need for a muslin.

Did you make any alterations to the pattern?

I did not make any alterations to pattern.  Although I did use contrasting fabric for the under collar, sleeve pockets, back placket, sleeve cuff.

Did you learn any new techniques/skills?

It had been awhile since doing flat-felled seams.  After the first seam, I switched to using the method involving French seams.  I also learned how to bind my seams. While cutting, I put my fabric matching skills to the test.  (And it worked!  Those pockets look so good!)

Do you have any tips for construction?

I followed the sew-along posted on the Closet Case website.  There were additional tips and tricks included there that would probably be really helpful for anyone making this jacket.  My biggest tip for any garment with buttons/buttonholes is to always do a test buttonhole and use Fray Check!

What did you like about the pattern/fabric?

I loved the pattern.  As usual, Heather did a great job with the written pattern instructions and the sew-along gave extra detail with clear pictures.  The fabric was great to sew with, I love the bright spring colors.

What did you dislike about the pattern/fabric?

I’m not sure if it was a mistake while cutting, but I did find the facings were shorter than noted in the instructions.  I had to get a bit creative while hemming.

Would you make it again?

I have my next one planed in either a denim or twill.  I will line the front pockets next time.  I am really excited that Closet Case is extending their size range!

Melanie’s Sienna Jacket is shown here over a denim Whittaker Pinafore and a Stitch Tee in a floral Art Gallery Knit.
